| Brief_description |
| A nature reserve. Vlei surrounded by low coastal dunes; open water fringed by extensive areas of Typha; much emergent Scirpus littoralis; some marshy patches with sedges/ rushes. Good numbers of Great Crested Grebe, White Pelican, Little Egret, Yellowbilled Egret (summer 1996), Cape Shoveler, Sacred Ibis and Blacksmith Plover recorded irregularly in summer, when peak numbers of most waterbirds occur; however, largest numbers of Grey and Blackheaded Herons, and Blackcrowned Night Heron, recorded in winter. Little Bittern resident; good population of Purple Gallinule; little habitat for small rails and migrant shore- birds. Serious threats include eutrophication and sedimentation, and encroachment of alien vegetation (e.g. Paspalum vaginatum); other threats are pollution by domestic sewage and solid waste, illegal access and disturbance, local development, and inflow of storm water. |
